And now, I\u2019m happy to report, <em>that book actually exists<\/em>. True, it was a statistical inevitability. Someday, someone would sit down and string together the letters properly, and a Colonel Sanders romance would come to be. But who would\u2019ve thought\u00a0we\u2019d have the good fortune to be alive for it?\u00a0Kate Taylor writes, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/kfc-romance-novel-is-a-raunchy-steamy-tale-2017-5?utm_source=Publishers+Weekly&amp;utm_campaign=1432819e03-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_05_09&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_0bb2959cbb-1432819e03-305790401\" target=\"_blank\">To celebrate Mother\u2019s Day\u2014the chicken chain\u2019s best-selling day of the year\u2014KFC published <em>Tender Wings of Desire<\/em>, a novella following the love affair between Lady Madeline Parker and Colonel Harland Sanders<\/a> \u2026 \u2018The only thing better than being swept away by the deliciousness of our Extra Crispy Chicken is being swept away by Harland Sanders himself,\u2019 George Felix, KFC\u2019s U.S. director of advertising, said in a statement.\u201d (As for the novella itself, here\u2019s a representative passage: \u201cThey were so consumed that it took every ounce of their restraint not to give into the first right then and there. The flames would continue to rage throughout the night until the fire was too much, and at last they could let it engulf them.\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Speaking of things I\u2019ve always wanted, here\u2019s another one: a museum that gives American writers their due but makes literature seem so anodyne and boring that no visitors get any bright ideas about becoming writers themselves. (I don\u2019t want the competition, you see.) And here, too, my dreams have come true. Witness the American Writers Museum, which makes a protean, deeply expressive art form seem like a neat self-improvement project. Jennifer Schuessler writes, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/08\/arts\/design\/american-writers-museum-literary-history.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Farts&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=arts&amp;region=rank&amp;module=package&amp;version=highlights&amp;contentPlacement=6&amp;pgtype=sectionfront&amp;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">Instead of manuscripts and first editions, there are interactive touch screens and high-tech multimedia installations galore, like a mesmerizing \u2018Word Waterfall,\u2019 in which a wall of densely packed, seemingly random words is revealed, through a constantly looping light projection, to contain resonant literary quotations<\/a> \u2026 Head from the entrance in one direction into a gallery called \u2018A Nation of Writers\u2019 and you get what might be called the logical, left-brain approach to literature, anchored by an eighty-five-foot-long wall that tells the chronological story of American writing through 100 significant writers. (The museum is careful not to say \u2018best.\u2019) \u2026 Visitors have to dig to get past the overall mood of inspirational uplift and moral progress and find knottier currents. Those who skip [the NPR critic Maureen] Corrigan\u2019s video commentary on literary experimentalism, for example, may not realize that <em>Lolita<\/em> is more than a novel that \u2018hinges on a road trip\u2014a classic American genre\u2014and riffs on motel and teen culture,\u2019 as the brief wall text dedicated to Vladimir Nabokov puts it.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vinson Cunningham reads John McWhorter\u2019s new book <em>Talking Back, Talking Black<\/em>, which mounts a compelling linguistic case for Black English: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2017\/05\/15\/the-case-for-black-english\" target=\"_blank\">McWhorter offers an explanation, a defense, and, most heartening, a celebration of the dialect that has become, he argues, an American lingua franca<\/a> \u2026 In five short essays, McWhorter demonstrates the \u2018legitimacy\u2019 of Black English by uncovering its complexity and sophistication, as well as the still unfolding journey that has led to its creation. He also gently chides his fellow-linguists for their inability to present convincing arguments in favor of vernacular language. They have been mistaken, he believes, in emphasizing \u2018systematicity\u2019\u2014the fact that a language\u2019s particularities are \u2018not just random, but based on rules.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In Vienna, Owen Hatherley celebrates the\u00a0<em>Gemeindebauten<\/em>\u2014apartment blocks of public housing from the twenties\u00a0and thirties that\u00a0realized an ambitious vision of working-class life in the city: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/placesjournal.org\/article\/socialism-and-nationalism-on-the-danube\/\" target=\"_blank\">The\u00a0<em>Gemeindebauten\u00a0<\/em>were a response not only to the housing crisis but also to a more existential dilemma<\/a>. What would be the identity of the city, now that it no longer ruled an immense land empire that extended from Trieste on the Adriatic to Lviv beyond the Carpathians? To the social democrats the answer was clear: Vienna would be a metropolis dedicated to the welfare and edification of its inhabitants, particularly the long-neglected working classes \u2026 The\u00a0<em>Hofs<\/em>\u00a0can be understood as not merely practical but ideological. No less than Gothic churches, they are absolutely loaded with rhetoric: massive mid-rise superblocks articulated with towers, archways, loggias, and bays; embellished with bas-reliefs, tiles, metalwork, and sculptures depicting workers and worker families. The labor-intensive construction was itself an integral part of the program: a means of employing as many workers as possible \u2026 Over the decades, the\u00a0<em>Gemeindebauten\u00a0<\/em>of Red Vienna have continued to function as vital and attractive housing, with accessible and attractive public spaces that remain a respite and a pleasure.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Andrew Kay went on the academic job market and the dating market at the same time and was dismayed to find that the two have eerie parallels: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thepointmag.com\/2017\/examined-life\/pilgrim-tinder-creek\" target=\"_blank\">My life was shortly to become an unremitting series of auditions. However neatly I inhabited the performative guises my life now demanded, some kernel of my inmost being remained, straining toward some affirmation of itself\u2014some lasting connection through which it could take root and fructify<\/a>. And it kept seeming to find this. Kept encountering signs of apparent interest, forming linkages that flourished a moment and then\u2014in a stroke of that blithe cruelty unique to digital culture, where rejection gets conveyed in haphazard texts, or no texts\u2014were choked off.
