Her plays have been produced by Page 73, Woolly Mammoth, Clubbed Thumb, and The Bushwick Starr, and will appear at Playwrights Horizons and Steppenwolf in 2018. She is the recipient of an Obie Award, the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award at The Vineyard, and the Page 73 Playwriting Fellowship. Barron was also the co-winner of the inaugural 2015 Relentless Award established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman for her play <em>Dance Nation<\/em>. She lives in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>An excerpt from\u00a0<\/em>Baby Screams Miracle<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nKayden, come here. Do you know who I am?<\/p>\n<p>KAYDEN<br \/>\nAunt Cynthia<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\n\u00adNo, I\u2019m your sister. Sister Cynthia. Because your mommy and daddy had me when they were very, very young. And then they didn\u2019t really want me like they wanted you, so.<\/p>\n<p>So you know what that means? That means you\u2019re a very lucky girl. And that means you have a big sister. And right now, I know it feels like I\u2019m more of a mommy than a sister, but one day we\u2019re gonna both be grown-ups and we\u2019re gonna talk about grown-up<br \/>\nthings and we\u2019ll be like sisters. I\u2019m excited for that. I\u2019m excited for that to happen.<\/p>\n<p>(Kayden looks at her.)<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nYour mom and dad are pretty nice now, huh?<\/p>\n<p>(Kayden nods.)<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nThat\u2019s good.<br \/>\nThey don\u2019t yell at you or\u2014<\/p>\n<p>KAYDEN<br \/>\nSometimes they yell<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nWell, yeah, sometimes they have to yell.<br \/>\nThey take you to the park and the ice-skating rink&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>KAYDEN<br \/>\nDairy Queen<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nOh yeah? That\u2019s good. That\u2019s cool.<br \/>\nThey let you go to the bathroom whenever you need to?<\/p>\n<p>KAYDEN<br \/>\nYeah<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nThat\u2019s good.<\/p>\n<p>(Kayden looks at her.)<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nYou\u2019re very shy, do you know that? I think your mommy and daddy think there\u2019s something wrong with you but I just think you\u2019re shy and quiet. Do you think that\u2019s true?<\/p>\n<p>KAYDEN<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nYou shouldn\u2019t be shy. Being shy doesn\u2019t get you very far in life. You have to put yourself out there, you know. You have to stand out. People say it\u2019s the shy, nerdy kids who come back and get revenge later in life, but they\u2019re wrong. It\u2019s the kids with charisma, you know what I\u2019m saying? The homecoming queen. That\u2019s who you want to be. That\u2019s who dominates everyone else from the time she\u2019s born until the time she dies. It\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>(Pause.)<\/p>\n<p>Come on. Let\u2019s practice. I say dance, you dance. Got it? I say dance, you dance. Okay. Dance.<\/p>\n<p>(Kayden doesn\u2019t move.)<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nYou have to dance. You have to move. You have to not be afraid to make a fool of yourself. Come on. Dance. Dance. Dance, Kayden. Dance.<\/p>\n<p>(Kayden doesn\u2019t move.)<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nGive me your shoes.<\/p>\n<p>KAYDEN<br \/>\nWhat?<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nYou didn\u2019t dance. Now you have to give me your shoes.<\/p>\n<p>(Kayden takes off her shoes and gives them to Cynthia.)<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nOkay. Let\u2019s try this again. Dance. I want you to dance. Come on. I don\u2019t care how you dance. I don\u2019t care how well you dance. Just move. Just moooove, god dammit. Do something.<\/p>\n<p>(Kayden doesn\u2019t move.)<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nGive me your pants.<\/p>\n<p>(Kayden takes off her pants and hands them to Cynthia.)<\/p>\n<p>CYNTHIA<br \/>\nI bet you feel pretty silly without your pants. And it\u2019s cold outside. And another storm is coming soon. And you\u2019re going to be without your shoes and without your pants and who knows what else.
