If you need further\u00a0evidence of their creativity, here\u2019s\u00a0a random profusion\u00a0of the nouns they use: <em>blue cheese<\/em>, <em>lotion<\/em>, <em>pantslessness<\/em>, <em>dark desert nights<\/em>, <em>the subjunctive<\/em>, <em>spoiled-milk breath<\/em>, <em>\u201cQ-TIPS!!!\u201d<\/em>, <em>infrastructure<\/em>, <em>pepperoni-size ear gauges<\/em>, <em>black-ass tumbleweed<\/em>, <em>Bone Thugs-N-Harmony<\/em>, and one <em>Mr. Disgusting<\/em>. This Thursday, March 23, New Yorkers can hear all of these wonders firsthand, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/101195820408237\/\" target=\"_blank\">the honorees read at McNally Jackson<\/a>, introduced by Rowan Ricardo Phillips (Whiting 2013).<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering what all this\u00a0\u201cWhiting\u201d is: Founded in 1985, the Whiting Awards, of fifty thousand dollars\u00a0each, are\u00a0based on \u201cearly accomplishment and the promise of great work to come.\u201d The program has awarded more than six million dollars to some 320\u00a0writers and poets, including Colson Whitehead, Suzan-Lori Parks, Alice McDermott, Akhil Sharma, David Foster Wallace, August Wilson, Tracy K. Smith, Tarell Alvin McCraney, Jeffrey Eugenides, and <em>The Paris Review<\/em>\u2019s own Mona Simpson and John Jeremiah Sullivan. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whiting.org\/awards\/winners\" target=\"_blank\">Click here for a list of all the previous honorees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to this year\u2019s honorees!
