(One may be tempted to object, after Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/music\/awards\/beyonce-grammys-performance-watch-video-1201986236\/\" target=\"_blank\">stunningly baroque performance at the Grammys last night<\/a>.) Parker will join\u00a0the Brooklyn Museum\u2019s Rujeko Hockley to discuss\u00a0black American womanhood, politics, art, and pop culture. Tickets are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bam.org\/literary\/2017\/unbound-morgan-parker\" target=\"_blank\">available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Parker\u2019s poem \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6446\/hottentot-venus-morgan-parker\" target=\"_blank\">Hottentot Venus<\/a>\u201d appeared in our Spring 2016 issue. (\u201cI wish my pussy could live \/ in a different shape and get \/ some goddamn respect,\u201d it begins.) Last summer, she told the\u00a0<em>Daily<\/em>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2016\/07\/22\/you-are-on-display-an-interview-with-morgan-parker\/\" target=\"_blank\">One thing that interests me about Beyonc\u00e9 is who her predecessors are<\/a>, and how she\u2019s a kind of symbol for all the different ways that black women are revered but also surveilled in a really intense way, put on display. That happens to me just walking down the street. It happens in another way for black women who are celebrities. The whole legacy of Hottentot Venus is one of dehumanization and display. I was interested in that line between awe or reverence\u2014and also exploitation. Where is that line? What does it mean to be at once upheld and at the same time continually made to feel less than? All these questions belonged in the manuscript, which I think of as kind of a tome of black womanhood.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parker, whose poem
