In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6806\/the-art-of-poetry-no-100-ishmael-reed\" target=\"_blank\">Art of Poetry No. 100<\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6806\/the-art-of-poetry-no-100-ishmael-reed\" target=\"_blank\">Ishmael Reed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is interviewed by <strong>Chris Jackson<\/strong>; Reed discusses\u00a0growing up in Buffalo, the search for \u201cnew mythologies\u201d that led him to write\u00a0<em>Mumbo Jumbo<\/em>, and his concerns for young writers of color:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Combative writing has always been our tradition, even when we try to avoid it. I recently saw an article in the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>about Cave Canem, the group of black poets, and one of them described the trend in black literature as a \u201cshift out of the \u2018I\u2019m a black man in America and it\u2019s hard\u2019 mode into the idea of \u2018you are who you are, so that\u2019s always going to be part of the poem.\u2019 \u201d As if the tradition of writing about black suffering\u2014I\u2019ve been \u2019buked and scorned and all that\u2014was dead. But why can\u2019t you write about the hardships that black men and women face in everyday life? H. Prynne<\/a><\/strong>\u2014the mage of the Cambridge School, now eighty\u2014gives his first-ever long interview, talking to <strong>Jeff Dolven\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Joshua Kotin<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Writers had better not be too cocksure that they\u2019ve got inspiration on their side. I have seen enough writers get stuck by not being vigilant enough about the tendency of their own work to repeat itself. You can call it fear, but you can also call it a kind of vigilance that motivates a writer to keep his wits about him\u2014or her. As the circumstances around you change and develop, if you don\u2019t change and develop, you get stuck. You get left behind with yourself.
