In a new interview with Jessie Chaffee, he offers some of his favorite metaphors for translation: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordswithoutborders.org\/dispatches\/article\/the-translator-relay-robyn-creswell-jessie-chaffee\" target=\"_blank\">A translator with only one metaphor is lost\u2014he or she needs three, four, dozens<\/a>! One of the great things about Benjamin\u2019s \u2018Task of the Translator\u2019\u2014a thrillingly unfathomable essay for me\u2014is the number of metaphors he gives us for translation, without settling on any one of them. He says translation is like a royal robe that amply enfolds the original; or else it is a series of vessel fragments which one pieces together with those of the original; or else it is like a tangent line that touches the sense of the original fleetingly at one point (which makes all the difference). He also says it\u2019s like a transparency that lets the light of pure language shine upon the original. All of these analogies have appealed to me at one time or another and I don\u2019t feel compelled to decide between them. Translation is most fun when it is ad hoc. I use whatever I have to hand. Sometimes a royal robe, sometimes a transparency.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Looking for the roots of bibliophilia\u2014a tragic condition wherein otherwise sane people start to say shit like \u201cI just love the smell of old books!\u201d\u2014Lorraine Berry looks back to Thomas Frognall Dibdin, a nineteenth-century English cleric who \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2017\/jan\/26\/bibliomania-the-strange-history-of-compulsive-book-buying\" target=\"_blank\">was obsessed with the physical aspects of books, and in his descriptions paid an intense attention to the details of their bindings and printings (rather than the content) that betrayed his own love<\/a> \u2026 Men who collected books were often portrayed as effeminate. In 1834, the British literary magazine the <em>Athenaeum<\/em> published an anonymous attack implying that one of the prominent members of Dibdin\u2019s club was homosexual. Dibdin\u2019s language, which has been noted for its sensuality, is full of double entendres and descriptions of book collecting in sexualised language; from his Bibliographical Decameron, some characteristic dialogue: \u2018Can you indulge us with a sip of this cream?\u2019 \u2018Fortunately it is in my power to gratify you with a pretty good taste of it.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alena Graedon talks to C\u00e9sar Aira, the Argentinean novelist who carries what\u2019s surely the world\u2019s brightest-burning torch for Borges: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/cesar-airas-infinite-footnote-to-borges?intcid=mod-latest\" target=\"_blank\">Aira\u2019s novels are difficult to classify\u2014they\u2019re by turns realist, surrealist, absurd, and philosophical<\/a>. He has written about an accident that disfigured the nineteenth-century German painter Johann Moritz Rugendas (<em>Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter<\/em>), a construction site haunted by naked ghosts (<em>Ghosts<\/em>), and a translator-cum-mad scientist who sets out to clone the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes (<em>The Literary Conference<\/em>). When I asked him, a while back, about works in progress, he described two very different books: one was an \u2018<em>extreme\u00a0<\/em>roman \u00e0 clef,\u2019 for which, he joked, \u2018only one person in the world\u2019 has the key. The other he compared to an Escher drawing, a \u2018completely irrational narrative.\u2019 His novels\u2019 most consistent features are their brevity\u2014they\u2019re generally a hundred pages or less\u2014and their method of composition, which he has called <em>la hu\u00edda hacia adelante<\/em>, or the constant flight forward. Roughly, this means that he writes without rewriting, inventing as he goes.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Jason Sheehan\u2019s favorite Western of all time is <em>Red Dead Redemption<\/em>, the 2010 video game: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/alltechconsidered\/2017\/01\/23\/510663505\/reading-the-game-red-dead-redemption\" target=\"_blank\">If we take as fact that Westerns are the American literary counterpoint to the samey-sameness and circular repetition of the Campbellian Hero\u2019s Journey in European high fantasy<\/a>\u2014that, like jazz or Cubism, the Western exists to turn classical form inside out in an attempt at telling a truer story by beginning with the hero, broken by his labors, and attempting (almost always) to get a fresh throw of fate\u2019s dice\u2014then <em>Red Dead<\/em> is a bonafide masterpiece \u2026 <em>Red Dead<\/em> uses every opportunity to deepen the connections between characters thrown together by circumstance and to gild its skeletal frame with what eventually becomes a remarkable tale of freedom versus servitude and the senselessness of violence used to solve violence begetting only more violence.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A new website lets you hear the \u201csound poetry\u201d of the Russian futurists: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/354070\/sound-poems-russian-futurist-artists-books-getty\/\" target=\"_blank\">The website, which features ten poems to explore from four books, launches to accompany\u00a0<em>Explodity: Sound, Image, and Word in Russian Futurist Book Art<\/em>, a publication by curator Nancy Perloff released last year<\/a>. These poems, written by Aleksei Kruchenykh and Velimir Khlebnikov, feature a new language invented by Russian Futurist painters and poets: <em>zaum<\/em>, which translates into \u2018beyond the mind,\u2019 escapes logical meaning but\u00a0emphasizes the sonic power of words. Like their texts, the accompanying visuals are also often elusive, suggestive of a narrative but still clinging
