In our Summer\u2013Fall 1961 issue, we published a portfolio of poems by Osip Mandelstam<\/a>, born on January 15, 1891, a Russian writer who was arrested under Stalin and exiled in the 1930s. Sentenced to a labor camp in Siberia,\u00a0he died en route\u00a0at a transit camp, aged forty-seven. In one poem, he writes,\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Take for joy from my outstretched palms
\nA little honey and a little sun
\nAs we were implored by the bees of Proserpine.<\/p>\n

No one can loose a boat that is unmoored.
\nNo one can hear the shadow shod in fur.
\nOne cannot track down fear in the dense forest of life.<\/p>\n

We are left only with kisses,
\nPrickling like tiny fuzzy bees
\nWhich die, having left the hive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
