On display at Derek Eller Gallery through February 5<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Sarah Manguso\u2019s\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.graywolfpress.org\/books\/300-arguments\" target=\"_blank\">300 Arguments<\/a>\u00a0<em>is out in February from Graywolf Press.\u00a0An early excerpt, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/6341\/short-days-sarah-manguso\" target=\"_blank\">Short Days<\/a>,\u201d appeared in the Winter 2014\u00a0issue of\u00a0<\/em>The Paris Review.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I love word games, in which words are reduced to objects, and which kill the intimacy I maintain with the same words when I\u2019m writing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There truly are two kinds of people: you and everyone else.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The best form isn\u2019t always the most efficient form.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m seldom bored at home, but I\u2019m often bored while traveling. At home, where my daily routine is automatic enough that I can almost ignore it, I\u2019m free to think about what I want.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to fail if one doesn\u2019t know how the end should look. And it\u2019s impossible to succeed. But it\u2019s possible to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I failed Chem 10 and gave up on becoming a physician. Then I became a chronically ill person. I know my case extremely well. I\u2019ve been practicing for more than twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Those without taste smugly praise the thrice-belaureled. Poor taste is something else.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Great talents encourage great incapacities, but maintaining an inability to cook an egg or drive a car won\u2019t make you into a genius.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The will can achieve some things, but one must exhaust one\u2019s will in order to learn which things they are.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I wish someone would tell me what I should be doing instead of this, that he\u2019d be right, and that I\u2019d believe him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes ill-informed choices have good outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every success story can be told as a series of failures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When a student surpasses my expectations, I feel proud and betrayed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I know a woman who runs marathons she doesn\u2019t train for. Isn\u2019t that bad for your joints or something? <em>You just have to be stubborn<\/em>, she says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Progress takes place in the dark, when you aren\u2019t trying.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My long romance with efficiency has made me miserly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.graywolfpress.org\/books\/300-arguments\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-106573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/300arguments.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/300arguments.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/300arguments-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/300arguments-768x1010.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/300arguments-778x1024.jpg 778w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Given a year\u2019s pay up front, I produce almost nothing. Given a month\u2019s pay, I produce what otherwise would have taken a year. Given nothing, I work when I can. Time and production must bear some relation to each other, but I couldn\u2019t say what it is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing wrong with being unhappy if you don\u2019t consider unhappiness a pathology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I used to have a handwriting. Now I just have a signature.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lack of effort poorly conceals lack of ability.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My friend who runs marathons, throws elaborate parties, sews quilts for everyone she knows, works full-time, and has three children does all of this not in spite of her useless husband but because of him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It takes time to recover from having run somewhere. But sometimes one just wants to run. Anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Someone I knew prevented me from getting a job. I fantasized about his death. Years later, he was fired publicly and shamefully. Then he was divorced. Then he developed a disabling illness. With each of his new misfortunes I\u2019m punished further, with secret guilt, for wishing all of it on him, long ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After I submitted the final draft of my book about a train-track suicide, the art department produced sketches for my book cover: a needle and a long skein of red thread; a length of fluffy pinkish lace; a yellow hand mirror lying on a patch of green grass. I gave my editor a note for the designers, and the next day they delivered a perfect cover design: a photograph of the book\u2019s subject, a man sitting on a train. This was the note: <em>Pretend this book was written by a man.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Everything has to be paid for, especially money.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Sarah Manguso is
