It\u2019s something I think about, because I know I\u2019m also writing for people who don\u2019t always hold my positions. It\u2019s not that I think white people are my only audience. It\u2019s that I think of America as my audience, and inside that space are white people as well as people of color. Some white people still believe that white privilege and white mobility are the universal position. If a writer has a different experience of the world, the work is no longer seen as transcendent or universal. So as I\u2019m moving around in a piece, I am hearing all those voices in opposition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6904\/alasdair-gray-the-art-of-fiction-no-232-alasdair-gray\" target=\"_blank\">the Art of Fiction No. 202<\/a>, Scotland\u2019s Alasdair Gray talks about\u00a0how socialism has shaped his fiction:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I think social justice is necessary to everybody. There are those who can take the political establishment of the time for granted, as being something quite good enough, to get on well with and to live well in if you exercise enough tact. This is certainly the opinion of Jane Austen. But it\u2019s a view that very few people\u2014well, very few thinking people\u2014would adopt nowadays, because we\u2019re all aware that our society is in transition, and that there is no normalcy to return to.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/miscellaneous\/6906\/art-and-propaganda-albert-murray\" target=\"_blank\">a lost interview with Albert Murray<\/a>,\u00a0conducted in his Harlem apartment in 1978:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When I spoke of Jelly Roll Morton, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington, I meant that not many writers have been more successful than these musicians in stylizing American experience. This immediately leads us into a problem that confronts me personally\u2014that not very much of my immediate experience has been processed into literature to my satisfaction. I can\u2019t think of many examples that bear too favorable a comparison to what I\u2019ve experienced of the literature of other cultures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Plus\u00a0new fiction by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6881\/creative-types-tom-bissell\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Bissell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6882\/moses-and-gaspar-amparo-davila\" target=\"_blank\">Amparo D\u00e1vila<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6884\/in-medieval-angelology-there-are-nine-orders-of-snow-alexander-kluge\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Kluge<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6883\/whats-necessary-to-remember-when-telling-a-story-christine-lincoln\" target=\"_blank\">Christine Lincoln<\/a>; and poems by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6894\/the-wayfarer-cyrus-console\" target=\"_blank\">Cyrus Console<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6890\/bunny-slope-tadeusz-dabrowski\" target=\"_blank\">Tadeusz Dabrowski<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6887\/after-callimachus-timothy-donnelly\" target=\"_blank\">Timothy Donnelly<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6885\/historically-speaking-stephen-dunn\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Dunn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6889\/entangle-tony-hoagland\" target=\"_blank\">Tony Hoagland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6886\/tapestry-fanny-howe\" target=\"_blank\">Fanny Howe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6888\/the-bear-sarah-manguso\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Manguso<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6899\/miss-charlotte-frederick-seidel\" target=\"_blank\">Frederick Seidel<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hilton Als has curated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/art-photography\/6903\/east-harlem-portraits-alice-neel\" target=\"_blank\">a portfolio of Alice Neel\u2019s East Harlem portraits<\/a>. \u201cFive years ago,\u201d he says, \u201cpeople would not have been inclined to do a show on Alice Neel\u2019s paintings of colored people, meaning people of non-\u00adEuropean descent, because they would feel that we\u2014the curators, the gallery\u2014were \u00adessentializing the people in the pictures.
