Less than a month ago, David Remnick profiled him for <em>The New Yorker<\/em>, and Cohen knew his time was near: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/10\/17\/leonard-cohen-makes-it-darker\" target=\"_blank\">I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll be able to finish those songs<\/a>. Maybe, who knows? And maybe I\u2019ll get a second wind, I don\u2019t know. But I don\u2019t dare attach myself to a spiritual strategy. I don\u2019t dare do that. I\u2019ve got some work to do. Take care of business. I am ready to die. I hope it\u2019s not too uncomfortable. That\u2019s about it for me.\u201d There\u2019s so much to be said for this: he was ready. \u201cPoetry is just the evidence of life,\u201d Cohen said once. \u201cIf your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.<i>\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Meanwhile, Shirley Collins, one of the stars of traditional British folk music, has started singing again in her eighties, after decades away from music. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/08\/arts\/music\/shirley-collins-lodestar-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\">It was only as Ms. Collins was approaching her eightieth birthday in 2014 that she started to seriously test the waters of performing again<\/a>. \u2018I was a singer,\u2019 she said in a phone interview from her cottage in the English countryside. \u2018I couldn\u2019t bear to leave this world without giving it one more go.\u2019 The results can be heard in the new album <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dominorecordco.us\/usa\/albums\/07-09-16\/lodestar\/\">Lodestar<\/a><\/em>, her first recording since 1979. The road to its creation snakes back twenty years, to when a younger friend of hers, the cult musician\u00a0David Tibet, beseeched her to try and sing again. She demurred, repeatedly. But every few years, he\u2019d nudge her again. Finally, two years ago, Ms. Collins said yes to a guest appearance at one of Mr. Tibet\u2019s shows in Islington, a north London neighborhood. \u2018That surprised me as much as anyone,\u2019 she said.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Zadie Smith believes her new novel, <em>Swing Time<\/em>, is in part a treatment of liberalism\u2019s shortcomings\u2014which makes it an ideal novel for our political moment. Jan Dalley writes, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/231416be-a5ac-11e6-8b69-02899e8bd9d1\" target=\"_blank\">Her picture of social mobility, race politics and the power relations of the rich and developing worlds paints a much less certain, less optimistic picture<\/a>. \u2018In some ways it\u2019s a failure of liberal thought,\u2019 she says, \u2018this idea of constant progression, perfectibility. History tells you that it\u2019s not the case, yet in Britain, and certainly in America, people are still inclined to think that way. That things will get better\u2009\u2026 The whole book to me is about power relations\u2014between people, countries, races\u2014I think there are a lot of people in the world who feel marginalized. Who feel pushed out of their own lives. I was interested in the people on the edges.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>When Anna Wilson was sixteen, she immersed herself in <em>Lord of the Rings <\/em>fanfic<em>.\u00a0<\/em>Later, reading the medieval writer Margery Kempe, Wilson saw that these early Mary Sue stories of hers\u00a0had emerged from the same emotional impulse: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/essays\/how-a-medieval-mystic-was-the-first-creator-of-fanfiction\" target=\"_blank\">The first time I read\u00a0<em>The Book of Margery Kempe<\/em>,<em>\u00a0<\/em>I was struck by recognition. Her visions, although religious in content, are very similar in form and in feeling to my Mary Sue stories<\/a>. As I read work by feminist scholars, pointing out the sexism of Kempe studies, I began to suspect that dismissals of fanfiction might equally be based in ideologies that I had swallowed whole. Kempe imagines herself into the Gospels as a speaking character, interacting with the Holy family and the disciples, in her own fanfiction of Christ\u2019s crucifixion. In a strangely compressed, time-travelling narrative, she works as a nursemaid for Mary\u2019s mother, helps Mary raise the baby Jesus, and offers her a shoulder to cry on at the crucifixion. Kempe\u2019s account is full of homely details that make it feel real and immediate; when Mary is worn out from weeping after the crucifixion, Kempe describes how she \u2018made for our Lady a good hot drink and brought it to her to comfort her\u2019, but Mary, distraught, responds: \u2018Do it awe, dowtyr. Geeve me no mete but myn owyn childe.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hold on to your butts, as Samuel L. Jackson would say\u2014we have four years of banned books ahead of us. I\u2019m predicting it now: we\u2019ll see a record-breaking number of idiotic parents trying to fuck with the curriculum. And it\u2019s already started in Tennessee, where one woman wants to do away with a whole history textbook just because it mentions Islam: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2016\/nov\/10\/tennessee-mother-calls-removal-school-world-history-textbook-pearson-complaint-islam-islamic-propaganda\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Edmisten, a founder of the Facebook group\u00a0Sullivan County Parents Against Islam Indoctrination, first raised the issue in October, after her daughter was given an assignment requiring her to answer questions about the name of Islam\u2019s holy book, and the five pillars of Islam<\/a>. Edmisten told the board of education that her child \u2018felt some of the assignments went against her beliefs as a Christian\u2019 \u2026 and called for the textbook\u2014<em>My World History<\/em>, published by UK-based Pearson\u2014to be \u2018yanked from the school immediately.\u2019 \u2018I would like to see parents, Christians, veterans, anyone that\u2019s anyone, stand up for this fight.
