Rebecca Mead spoke with him, and boy, is he looking on the bright side: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/11\/07\/the-cinematic-traumas-of-kenneth-lonergan\" target=\"_blank\">It\u2019s good to have a forward-thinking attitude\u2014and I wish I had more of one\u2014but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s so bad that some people can\u2019t<\/a>. \u2018Oh, well, my mom\u2019s dead. She was nice, that\u2019s O.K.\u2019\u2014it just makes me sick \u2026\u00a0\u2018It\u2019s fine, I\u2019m dying.\u2019 \u2018It\u2019s fine, your mother\u2019s dying, it\u2019s no problem, it\u2019s just life. It\u2019s just a circle of life.\u2019\u00a0<em>What\u00a0<\/em>fucking circle of life? It all goes in one direction\u2014toward\u00a0<em>death<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2026 <em>Or does it? <\/em>Wang Deshun, an eighty-year-old runway model known as \u201cChina\u2019s hottest grandpa,\u201d has such vim and vitality that he seems, on the catwalk, to defy death itself: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/04\/world\/asia\/china-wang-deshun-model-80.html\" target=\"_blank\">Determined to avoid mental and physical stagnation, Mr. Wang has explored new skills and ideas while devoting ample time to daily exercise<\/a>. Last year, he walked the runway for the first time, his physique causing a national sensation. He takes obvious joy in subverting China\u2019s image of what it means to be old \u2026 Mr. Wang has not escaped being called grandpa\u2014he has two children and a two-year-old granddaughter\u2014but the honorific is accompanied by accolades for his vigor and his embrace of the new.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Revisiting <em>The Omni-Americans<\/em>\u2014Albert Murray\u2019s 1970 debut, \u201can astute, if searing, riposte to both black complacency and black militancy\u201d\u2014Douglas Brinkley writes that it\u2019s forever changed his view of race in America: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.loa.org\/news-and-views\/1214-the-centurions-ralph-ellison-and-albert-murray\" target=\"_blank\">What Murray flat-out objected to in the Moynihan Report of 1965 was the \u2018sociological\u2019 ghettoizing of the black experience<\/a>. While Murray accepted the idea that the report offered a window into Harlem dysfunction, it was extremely limited in pedagogical approach. Where were the elegance of Duke Ellington\u2019s \u2018In a Sentimental Mood\u2019 or the flashing colors of Romare Bearden\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Block\u00a0<\/em>in this respect? Murray rejected the notion that all blacks felt beaten or victimized. Murray preferred celebrating Negro excellence in the arts than woeful factoids pertaining to high black prison incarceration rates. To Murray black folks could\u2014and had\u2014achieved their individual excellence under repressive conditions. \u2018What Louis Armstrong had been doing in popular songs all these years,\u2019 Murray argued, \u2018is an infinitely more accurate index to fundamental U.S. Negro attitudes toward \u201cwhite culture\u201d than are some of the embarrassingly superficial and contradictory gestures of alienation currently so popular among some black nationalists and \u201cAfro-Zionists.\u201d \u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>James McWilliams is into the idea of bibliotherapy: Why not use novels to cure what ails us? But he\u2019s quick to acknowledge the potential pitfalls: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2016\/11\/books-should-send-us-into-therapy-on-the-paradox-of-bibliotherapy.html\" target=\"_blank\">More interesting would be to reverse the bibliotherapeutic premise altogether<\/a>. Instead of asking \u2018what\u2019s wrong with you?\u2019 and assigning a book, assign a book and ask \u2018what\u2019s wrong with you?\u2019 When I lend books to friends outside of therapy, this strategy (upon reflection) is basically what I\u2019m testing. I\u2019m not trying to solve a person\u2019s problem. I\u2019m trying, in a way, to\u00a0<em>create one<\/em>. I want to shake someone out of complacency. Great novels (and sometimes not so great ones) jar us, often unexpectedly. Ever have a novel sneak up on you and kick you in the gut, leaving you staring into space, dazed by an epiphany? Yes. Novels do this. They present obstacles that elicit the catharsis (from\u00a0<em>katharo<\/em>, which means clearing obstacles) we didn\u2019t think we needed. We should allow books to cause more trouble in our lives.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And China Mi\u00e9ville is rereading Thomas More\u2019s <em>Utopia<\/em>: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2016\/nov\/04\/thomas-more-utopia-500-years-china-mieville-ursula-le-guin\" target=\"_blank\">The fact that the utopian impulse is always stained doesn\u2019t mean it can or should be denied or battened down<\/a>. It is as inevitable as hate and anger and joy, and as necessary. Utopianism isn\u2019t hope, still less optimism: it is need, and it is desire. For recognition, like all desire, and for the specifics of its reveries and programs, too; and above all for betterness <em>tout court<\/em>. For alterity, something other than the exhausting social lie. For rest. And when the cracks in history open wide enough, the impulse may even jimmy them a little wider. We can\u2019t do without\u00a0<em>Utopia<\/em>.
