It\u2019s a handsome gun, soon to be up for auction, and it\u2019s sure to make a great Christmas gift for the one you love. Agence France-Presse explains, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/oct\/19\/gun-with-which-verlaine-shot-rimbaud-up-for-auction?CMP=twt_gu\" target=\"_blank\">Verlaine bought the 7mm six-shooter in Brussels on the morning of 10 July 1873, determined to put an end to a torrid two-year affair with his teenage lover<\/a> \u2026 It was in a hotel room there at two in the afternoon where, after the lovers had rowed, cried, and got drunk\u2014according to Rimbaud\u2014that the suicidal Verlaine raised the pistol. \u2018Here\u2019s how I will teach you how to leave!\u2019 he shouted, before firing twice at Rimbaud. One bullet hit him in the wrist, while the other bullet struck the wall and ricocheted into the chimney. But, having been bandaged up in hospital, Rimbaud again begged the author of <em>Po\u00e8mes saturniens<\/em> not to leave him. Verlaine, who was to be dogged by drink and drug addiction all his life, pulled out the revolver again and threatened him with it in the street.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hey, honest question\u2014are you in an online cult? Think about it. The Internet is, in some ways, little more than a cult-delivery mechanism. As Linda Besner writes, \u201cIn the 1961 handbook\u00a0<em>Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, <\/em>the\u00a0psychologist Robert Lifton suggests that cults can be identified by, among others, the following traits: the creation of neologisms designed to reshape the adherent\u2019s outlook, separation from family and friends, fostering cognitive dissonance, confessional pressure, and a charismatic leader. In other words, cults are about control \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/reallifemag.com\/remote-control\/\" target=\"_blank\">An online \u2018cult\u2019 would not need to kidnap you, or bring pamphlets to your door, or go to you at all; instead, you would go to them<\/a>. Perhaps the greatest difference is how much of a self-starter the average follower needs to be. The onus is on you to indoctrinate yourself.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Amanda Petrusich revisits the work of Washington Phillips, a \u201cdisorienting, hypnotic\u201d singer with an inexplicable history: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/some-of-us-are-haunted-by-washington-phillips?intcid=mod-latest\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Phillips\u2014a stocky, snuff-dipping gospel singer from East Texas, who recorded eighteen songs for Columbia Records between 1927 and 1929\u2014is an uncommonly captivating cipher<\/a>. Since at least 1991, when Yazoo Records issued \u201cI Am Born to Preach the Gospel,\u201d the first digital compilation of Phillips\u2019s work, listeners have been trying to suss out exactly what Phillips was doing in the makeshift Dallas studio where these songs were recorded. They simply do not seem born of this earth.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Tim Wu\u2019s new book,\u00a0<em>The Attention Merchants<\/em>, looks at the increasingly slick corporate efforts to commodify our eyeballs: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/137107\/perils-peak-attention\" target=\"_blank\">The carnivalesque history of early American advertising, with its hodgepodge of pseudoscience and quasi-religious transcendence, has been told before<\/a>, most memorably in Jackson Lears\u2019s 1994\u00a0<em>Fables of Abundance<\/em>. But [Tim] Wu\u2019s succinct reexamination is important, for he shows how the nascent attempt at capturing attention was marked by a set of events\u2014the emergence of a new medium whose power or use was not yet fully understood, a land-rush by commercial interests, a cultural backlash against that commercialization, and an ongoing quest for legitimacy by advertisers\u2014that would be repeated in decades to come, each time drawing closer to the privacy of our inner lives.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Gustav Klimt was primarily an allegorist\u2014his life-size portraits of women were an unusual departure for him. A new exhibition tries to suss out his relationship to the feminine: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/14\/arts\/design\/klimts-women-real-and-on-canvas.html?mtrref=getpocket.com&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">While the paintings represent chic, modern women who belong to a world of elegance and luxury, they also have the effect of exoticizing and etherealizing their subjects<\/a>. As the art historian Jill Lloyd observes in her catalog essay, they seem both women of their time and timeless symbols of femininity, at once contemporary and archaic.
