The Vatican once declared his play <em>Mistero Buffo<\/em>, a kind of one-man political-satire revue, to be \u201cthe most blasphemous show in the history of television.\u201d (If you\u2019re confused, this was in 1977, well before the undeniably satanic <em>Pretty Little Liars<\/em> hit the airwaves.)\u00a0As the<em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em> has it, Fo and his late wife\u2013collaborator, Franca Rame, did more to upend the art of political theater than anyone in their generation:\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/14\/arts\/international\/dario-fo-playwright-nobel-literature.html\" target=\"_blank\">Basing their art on the tradition of the medieval jester and the improvisation techniques of commedia dell\u2019arte, Mr. Fo and Ms. Rame thrilled, dismayed and angered audiences around the world<\/a>. Together they staged thousands of performances, in conventional theaters, factories occupied by striking workers, university sit-ins, city parks, prisons and even deconsecrated churches.\u201d\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/literature\/laureates\/1997\/fo-lecture.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fo\u2019s 1997 Nobel lecture<\/a>\u00a0in full; it features color drawings, glugging sounds, and a long aside about a glassblower, and is generally much more fun than speeches are supposed to be. Plus, it culminates in some sound advice:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Our job is\u2014in keeping with the exhortation of the great Italian poet Savinio\u2014\u201cto tell our own story.\u201d Our task as intellectuals, as persons who mount the pulpit or the stage, and who, most importantly, address to young people, our task is not just to teach them method, like how to use the arms, how to control breathing, how to use the stomach, the voice, the falsetto, the\u00a0<em>contracampo. <\/em>It\u2019s not enough to teach a technique or a style: we have to show them what is happening around us. They have to be able to tell their own story.
