So he wasn\u2019t surprised when it got a savage notice in an organ called <em>The Daily Sniveler<\/em> by one \u201cMack the Knife\u201d\u2014a nom de guerre for Barnes himself. Yes, Barnes trashed his own novel, just so he could be sure he got there first. \u201cIn the old days,\u201d he wrote, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2016\/sep\/30\/julian-barnes-on-writing-metroland\" target=\"_blank\">the Sensitive Young Man, after producing his novel, would slide back into the obscurity of book-reviewing and hock-and-seltzer<\/a>; he would in middle age be much taken with writing letters to the newspapers; and in old age, chairbound in his club, he would reveal himself to be the unremitting philistine which his earlier manifestation had sought to conceal. We must wish Mr Barnes well as he sets off on this inevitable journey.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hi, here are some metaphors: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordswithoutborders.org\/dispatches\/article\/36-metaphors-for-translation-jessie-chaffee\" target=\"_blank\">Translation is a handshake. Translation is mimicry. Translation is a chess match. Translation is reproductive printmaking. Translation is a groom kissing a bride through her veil. Translation is an imaginary map. Translation is a hall of mirrors. Translators are horticulturists. Translators are conductors of an orchestra of words. Translators are ghosts. Translators are ninjas. Translators are\u2026<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Tokyo, Sam Kriss paid a visit to the Nakagin Capsule Tower, the crowning achievement of an architecture collective called the Metabolists. Its modular design comprises a series of pods, each containing a bed, a kitchen, a toilet, and some storage space\u2014and more pods could be added or subtracted as its residents deemed appropriate. A beautiful idea, right? Well, it failed: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/02\/magazine\/letter-of-recommendation-the-nakagin-capsule-tower.html\" target=\"_blank\">Some of the pods are still inhabited, but it\u2019s hard to see how. From outside, the tower looked like a dying animal, sweating and greasy in the heat, trapped inside its wire netting<\/a>. Looking up, you could see that some capsules had been half-filled with rotting garbage, a rippling line of trash drawn across their single windows. Inside, panels peel from the ceilings and mold crawls underneath; grime and seepage scorches the concrete with strange, bubbling forms. Kurokawa\u2019s masterpiece was an utter, unsalvageable failure.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>What keeps me up at night is China. I lie there muttering to myself, What would Mao Zedong think of China today? Richard Kurt Kraus and Jeffrey Wasserstrom, writing in the <em>TLS<\/em>, have better versions of the same question\u2014and, more important, they have answers. But for now let\u2019s focus on the questions: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-tls.co.uk\/articles\/public\/mangoes-k-pop-kfc\/?CMP=Spklr-_-Editorial-_-TWITTER-_-TheTLS-_-20160929-_-ArtsandCulture-_-602918776\" target=\"_blank\">What would the Red Guards, who poured into Tiananmen by the hundreds of thousands to listen to their hero Mao Zedong fifty years ago, think of today\u2019s youthful militants expressing their anger at the United States, seen as trying to check China\u2019s rise, by rallying outside Chinese branches of Kentucky Fried Chicken and trying to prevent customers from entering<\/a>? What would Chairman Mao, who died (or, in Communist Party parlance, \u201cwent to meet Marx\u201d) forty years ago, think of Seoul-based bands being blocked from appearing on Chinese television and touring the mainland because of a South Korean missile programme? And what would he make of the young Chinese calling for a boycott of mangoes grown in the Philippines for its claim on disputed islands?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Plenty of things make Nicholson Baker a talented writer, but Evan Kindley has identified perhaps his most salient feature: a highly developed poking finger. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/everything-is-interesting\/\" target=\"_blank\">What sets Baker apart from his peers is how genuinely odd he is<\/a>,\u201d Kindley writes: \u201cHe is driven by a rather singular set of obsessions, and his writing, though always finely crafted, often feels compulsive, as if his mind were a perpetual-motion machine unable to bring itself to rest\u2026Baker\u2019s attempts to poke things and find out where they squeak has led him to his two great subjects, the mundane and the erotic, both of which he limns in extraordinary detail\u2026Half the time Baker\u2019s Seinfeld, the other half he is Sade.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today in extravagant acts of self-protection: Julian Barnes wasn\u2019t a fan of his first novel, 1980\u2019s Metroland.
