Now we\u2019re thrilled to report that\u00a0Chris Bachelder\u2019s novel\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Throwback-Special-Novel-Chris-Bachelder\/dp\/0393249468\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1474055691&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=the+throwback+special\" target=\"_blank\">The Throwback Special<\/a>\u2014<\/em>which was serialized in\u00a0<em>The Paris Review\u00a0<\/em>and won our Terry Southern Prize for Humor this year\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/the-national-book-awards-longlist-fiction-2\" target=\"_blank\">has been longlisted for the National Book Award<\/a>.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>The Throwback Special\u00a0<\/em>appears in the\u00a0<em>Review\u00a0<\/em>in four installments, beginning with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6383\/the-throwback-special-part-1-chris-bachelder\" target=\"_blank\">Summer 2015<\/a> issue.\u00a0Each installment is illustrated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/author\/jason-novak\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Novak<\/a>. Minneapolis\u2019s\u00a0<em>Star Tribune<\/em> calls it \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/review-the-throwback-special-by-chris-bachelder\/371725111\/\" target=\"_blank\">2016\u2019s first Great Book \u2026 A wise, patient examination of American culture<\/a>.\u201d The <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> praises its \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/la-ca-jc-throwback-special-20160320-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">poignant comic magic &#8230; powerful, intelligent, and entertaining<\/a>.\u201d And the<em>\u00a0New York Times Book Review<\/em>\u00a0writes that it \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/27\/books\/review\/the-throwback-special-by-chris-bachelder.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">conjures the rewarding melancholy of Richard Ford\u2019s Frank Bascombe novels<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our congratulations to Chris. And we\u2019d be remiss in omitting Garth Greenwell, whose novel,\u00a0<em>What Belongs to You<\/em>,<em>\u00a0<\/em>is also on this year\u2019s National Book Award longlist. Garth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6314\/gospodar-garth-greenwell\" target=\"_blank\">contributed a story to our Summer 2014\u00a0issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you enjoy\u00a0trivia: this isn\u2019t the first time a novel first published by\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Review\u00a0<\/em>has been nominated for a National Book Award.
