I recently saw an article in the <em>New York Times <\/em>about Cave Canem, the group of black poets, and one of them described the trend in black literature as a \u201cshift out of the \u2018I\u2019m a black man in America and it\u2019s hard\u2019 mode into the idea of \u2018you are who you are, so that\u2019s always going to be part of the poem.\u2019 \u201d As if the tradition of writing about black suffering\u2014I\u2019ve been \u2019buked and scorned and all that\u2014was dead. But why can\u2019t you write about the hardships that black men and women face in everyday life? It was certainly hard for Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6807\/the-art-of-poetry-no-101-j-h-prynne\" target=\"_blank\">Art of Poetry No. 101<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6807\/the-art-of-poetry-no-101-j-h-prynne\" target=\"_blank\">J. H.
