Her last\u00a0collection, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coppercanyonpress.org\/pages\/browse\/book.asp?bg=%7B72287323-4F01-4767-A6B9-7AC939F5AB30%7D\" target=\"_blank\">Spectral Waves<\/a><em>, was released by Copper Canyon Press in 2006; DeFrees passed away last year.\u00a0<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Beside my bed the lamplight glows: a glass base<br \/>filled with shells containing<br \/>news of ocean. Each shell encloses what the sea<br \/>says to the listener. Each whorl and coil<br \/>reflects the secrets there.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Echo and Narcissus.<br \/>He falls in love with the image: his vision<br \/>flowers. She pines away for the other: nothing<br \/>left but the voice. The sun-drowned<br \/>sepals in the old stereoscope we called<br \/>a stereopticon: two complementary views\u2014right<br \/>eye and left\u2014caught on film the brain<br \/>registers and light fuses to a third dimension.<\/p>\n<p>We let those wave-lengths tell us what the world<br \/>means, a corollary of echo-<br \/>location: different densities sending bulletins<br \/>from underwater. Ship Harbor Inn: we slept<br \/>above the Sound\u2014frogs and crickets<br \/>a fluttering circle on the ear\u2019s horizon. That<br \/>one long note, the foghorn<br \/>cutting in and out of sleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Waves know their<br \/>burden of heavy minerals by weight. Neatly,<br \/>they sort them out in ocean\u2019s bed of separate<br \/>deposits: gold from monazite, red<br \/>garnet from zircon. Disaster always in their\u00a0<br \/>wake, waves stumble on<br \/>sifting platinum from chromite, grain by grain.<br \/>Some, considering the ocean<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 prospect, have made<br \/>themselves minor profits. Others<br \/>have gone for broke. Isn\u2019t that Gruber, there<br \/>next to the breeches\u2019<br \/>buoy? The 300-pound quarryman we left, too fat<br \/>to fit in, refusing to be tied? His mid-<br \/>section circled by two life-preservers,<br \/>he made it finally in a bo\u2019s\u2019n\u2019s chair, the first<br \/>to pass dry-shod.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And now the ferry docks<br \/>briefly at Shaw Island: a brown-robed nun,<br \/>Franciscan in pill-box hat with veil attached,<br \/>runs down the gangplank in sandals.<br \/>Clank of heavy chains, and then the double<br \/>dissolve into Friday<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Harbor and the Whale Museum<br \/>where we saw a brain three times our size.<br \/>Remember the days we took to let the sea settle?<br \/>Bald Hill and Dinner Island? Cape San Juan<br \/>and Sunset Point.
