Jarrell died before he could finish part I\u2014at times the verse is a little rough\u2014but Robert Lowell stepped in to translate Gretchen\u2019s famous Spinning Song, which now reads, very movingly, like an elegy for his friend: \u201cMy peace is gone, \/ My heart is sore, \/ I never find it, \/ I never find it. \/\/ When I look through my window, \/ I look for him. \/ When I leave the house, \/ I go on looking.\/\/&#8230;If only I could \/ Catch him and hold him.\u201d \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I saw Ibsen\u2019s <em>John Gabriel Borkman<\/em> on Tuesday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Ben Bratley <a href=\"http:\/\/theater.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/14\/theater\/reviews\/14john.html\">describes<\/a> James Macdonald\u2019s \u201cthaw-proof\u201d production as having a \u201csense-numbing wintriness\u201d to it. I loved the sight of Lindsay Duncan, Alan Rickman, and Fiona Shaw standing amid large banks of snow on stage. A small blizzard descended on New York that evening, and when I exited the theater, snow was falling heavily. For a brief moment, it felt as if I hadn\u2019t yet left the play. \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Deluxe-Boxset-Sandy-Denny\/dp\/B003N18PI2\">box set of Sandy Denny\u2019s complete recordings<\/a> are an imposing introduction to one of the most indelible voices of the last fifty years. Fortunately, Rob Young is at hand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/music\/2011\/jan\/08\/sandy-denny-folk-music-singer\">to steer a course through her work<\/a>. Denny\u2019s rich and allusive personal mythology\u2014which draws upon maritime literature, pre-Raphaelite poetry, and English classical music\u2014has been a major influence on artists like Kate Bush and Joanna Newsom. Head straight for \u201cAll Our Days,\u201d \u201can eight minute mini-cantata with chords streaking like shafts of sunlight stabbing through clouds, and the alien ripple of a vibraphone recalling the mystical opening of [Vaughan Williams\u2019s] Eighth Symphony.\u201d \u2014<strong>Jonathan Gharraie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Do you like bananas? Did you know there are fuzzy pink bananas? Bananas with pulp the color of orange sherbert? Bananas that taste like strawberries?! Mike Peed\u2019s <em>New Yorker<\/em> story about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2011\/01\/10\/110110fa_fact_peed\">the great banana blight<\/a> is a fascinating read on one of America\u2019s favorite fruits. \u2014<strong>T. L. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have finally plunged into Chuck Klosterman\u2019s <em>Eating the Dinosaur<\/em>, and I wish I hadn\u2019t waited so long. From the failures of star athletes to Kurt Cobain\u2019s affinity for smashing his guitars to the philosophical dilemmas of time travel, Klosterman\u2019s pretentious-yet-charming pop-culture references are endless, but I\u2019m always pleased when I get them.  \u2014<strong>Sam Dolph<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perpetually behind in my reading, I just finished an article on <em>Mad Men<\/em> creator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/news\/mad-men-creator-matt-weiner-on-his-hollywood-struggles-and-how-george-lois-is-like-tony-soprano-not-don-draper-20100903\">Matthew Weiner<\/a> in <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s September issue. Apparently, in an era of celebrity and self-promotion, Weiner made a conscious decision to hire previously unknown actors so that viewers could project their fantasies onto the characters more fully.  \u2014<strong>Kate Guadagnino<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m reading Randall Jarrell\u2019s translation of Goethe\u2019s Faust, for no better reason than that I found a good used copy while browsing at the Strand.
