He also loved the Fourth of July and Saint\u00a0Patrick\u2019s Day\u2014any event, really, that occasioned a parade and the shooting off of fireworks. \u201cEcstasy after ecstasy\u201d and \u201ctransfixed with joy\u201d is how his friends have described his appreciation for the colorful explosions. We\u2019d like to think that Bastille Day was special for him: Paris was, of course, where the magazine was born. The storming of the Bastille is a decidedly different venture from initiating a literary magazine, but our founders had revolution in mind.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the Republic and the <em>Review<\/em>, we\u2019re offering <a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/the-french-collection\" target=\"_blank\">our most Parisian issues<\/a> (judging by their covers, anyway) at a discount. Details below.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From those years on the Left Bank: <a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/back-issues\/products\/the-paris-review-no-32\" target=\"_blank\">Issue 32<\/a> features an Art of Fiction interview with Jean Cocteau and a reproduction of his twenty-centime Marianne stamp on the cover. <a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/back-issues\/products\/the-paris-review-no-38\" target=\"_blank\">Issue 38<\/a> is announced by Jack Youngerman\u2019s 1966 painting <em>July White<\/em>, in the colors of the French flag (the contents aren\u2019t bad either: an Arthur Miller interview and a portfolio of sestinas by Joe Brainard and Kenward Elmslie). A grape-colored Eiffel Tower graces the cover of <a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/back-issues\/products\/the-paris-review-no-43\" target=\"_blank\">issue 43<\/a>, which contains our interview with Jack Kerouac and fiction by John Ashbery, James Schuyler, Donald Barthelme, and others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/back-issues\/products\/the-paris-review-no-67\" target=\"_blank\">Issue 67<\/a> found the <em>Review<\/em> in New York, though Ed Ruscha\u2019s cover still says <small>PARIS<\/small>, in an orange serif typeface (John Cheever, Maxine Kumin, Stephen Dixon, and Albert Goldbarth are found in these pages). <a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/back-issues\/products\/the-paris-review-no-67\" target=\"_blank\">Issue 167<\/a> is our fiftieth-anniversary issue and commemorates the occasion with a plenitude of writers (perhaps the most of any issue); on the cover, \u201ca spindly personage (the <em>Review<\/em>) charging triumphantly into a second half-century,\u201d Plimpton writes. \u201cA <em>salut<\/em> to both the horse and its rider!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/back-issues\/products\/the-paris-review-no-200-spring-2012\" target=\"_blank\">issue 200<\/a>\u2014a milestone for any quarterly\u2014and another horse and rider, this time reinventing the\u00a0<em>Review<\/em>\u2019s first issue; and <a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/back-issues\/products\/the-paris-review-no-204-spring-2013\" target=\"_blank\">issue 204<\/a>, our sixtieth-anniversary issue, which not only features a cover by JR wheat-pasted onto a wall in Paris\u2019s 11th arrondissement but also a portfolio of archival material: Tom Keough\u2019s Parisian sketches, vintage\u00a0<em>Paris Review<\/em> tattoos, and William P\u00e8ne du Bois\u2019s gag collages (\u201cMy God, it\u2019s Plimpton!\u201d).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>George Plimpton loved Bastille Day.
