The Girl’s Song

Young girl’s song, insistent song
wafting from a hidden room and wandering
in the quiet streets—why do you sound
so sad to me? Why do you tear at my heart
so fiercely it brings me to tears?
And yet you’re happy; joyous voices of hope,
each note of yours rehearses
the expected moment. Yet though you’re happy,
you seem like a lament to me,
and pierce my soul with pity. The idea
of hope itself comes back a cause of pain
to him who’s known it.
