(after Rilke)

The sovereigns of the world are old,
and die without heirs.
Their sons die young behind guarded doors.
Their daughters yield weak crowns to violence;
they break in the rough hands of the people.
The haughty, beefcattle faces bleed
into eagles and hammers.
