Assistant or Associate Editor | Business & Events Manager | Editorial Internship
The Paris Review is seeking a skilled assistant or associate editor (depending on their experience level) to work with the magazine’s online editor on the Review’s website. Duties will include assigning and editing nonfiction pieces, including memoir and reportage; coming up with new series and rubrics; pulling excerpts from forthcoming nonfiction books; working with the online editor and the engagement editor to grow the website’s audience and celebrate the print magazine’s archive; and coordinating publication schedules, copyediting timelines, and contracts.
This editor will be a passionate, discerning reader of contemporary literature, and will have an ear to the ground for emerging and lesser-known voices. They will be excited to contribute to all areas of office life; should be attuned to the sensibility and literary history of the magazine; and will be ready to think strategically about the Review’s presence online and in the world. As the Review embarks on a redesign of its website, this is a unique opportunity to support a new vision for the magazine’s online offerings and to publish new writing by the most exciting authors of the day.
The assistant / associate editor’s duties will include:
—Assisting the online editor with soliciting and editing short- and long-form prose (mostly nonfiction), and thinking up imaginative ways of celebrating the magazine’s seventy-three-year archive.
—Reporting directly to the online editor, work closely with the engagement editor, and help oversee the site’s publishing schedule and annual budget.
—Contributing to newsletters and special projects, such as The Paris Review Podcast and the Paris Review Editions book series.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience editing for print and/or online magazines, or other relevant experience.
Salary range: $55,000-70,000, commensurate with experience.
This is a full-time position based in our New York City office. (Mondays and Fridays are currently remote during the summer months; Fridays are currently remote year-round.) Benefits include employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, and a 403(b) retirement plan.

—Your relevant experience, why you are suited to the role, and what improvements you’d want to make to the Daily.
—Three to five ideas for Daily pieces and the writers you’d want to assign them to.
—Thoughts on your favorite and least favorite pieces published on the Daily in the past year.

The Paris Review offers editorial internships twice a year (two interns per term). The six-month duration of the internship provides interns an in-depth introduction both to the publication of a literary magazine and to the wider publishing world.
Each internship term covers two full issues of the quarterly magazine. Interns assist with every step of the magazine’s production, particularly with fact-checking, as well as reading and evaluating submissions and researching potential interviews. In addition, they participate broadly across The Paris Review’s administrative, development, and digital departments.
The Paris Review welcomes applicants with an interest in the magazine’s dual mission: to pursue the best and most exciting voices of the day and to support ambitious, inquisitive readers all over the world. In particular, we seek applicants eager to participate as the magazine moves forward with new voices and new technologies, while also celebrating the lessons of some of literature’s greatest masters.
Previous Paris Review interns have gone on to find work at a wide range of publishing houses, magazines, and newspapers, among them Picador, HarperCollins, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Simon and Schuster, New York Magazine, Poets & Writers, and the New York Times. Others have gone on to enjoy successful freelance careers as editors and writers, or to pursue graduate work.
The internship is full-time (40 hours/week) for six months and is compensated at $22/hour, with the option to enroll in health insurance. Applicants should be able to work from our New York City office, depending on health and safety restrictions in New York.
