Conspiracy Theories, and Other News

  • Literary conspiracy theories, anyone?
  • Paragraph is a new app that curates great short stories. (Yes, we are represented!)
  • And, inevitably, iambic pentameter bots.
  • What would Jesus eat? The subgenre of Christian cookbooks.
  • And ... the National Book Critics Circle finalists are announced.

That Paragraph app is terrible. The reading experience is saturated with music, images and the option of ‘listening to the text. Traditionally, the atmosphere of a book was created by the reader’s interaction with the text – apps like this wrap you up in a cozy media bubble and dictate the conditions of your reading experience. I think that’s a bad thing. I should add that songs with vocals can only distract one’s attention from text. Reading this comment, you probably think I’m a reactionary Luddite or stating the obvious, depending on your age.
