Barry Yourgrau on Super 8 (?)

March 31, 2011 | by

As the late Édouard Levé once wrote, “I like watching anything shot on Super 8, even though that is in such predictable good taste.” We feel the same. So imagine our delight to discover this video of the melifluous and virtuosic Barry Yourgrau reading one of his recent Gangster Fables—shot on an iPhone using the “8mm” app.

Here endeth the ad.

    Dear Lorin Stein,

I really, really hope you get your translation of Levé’s book read over by someone who actually knows how to translate. Even the brief excerpt you have published is littered with error. “Toboggan” in this context doesn’t mean sled, it means slide; “reveillon” doesn’t mean alarm clock, it means NYE, etc., etc.

    Dear Ms Tasic,

Mea maxima culpa. The truly pathetic thing is that I *did* have an actual French person look over my translation (I always do; my French is wretched). This friend kindly pointed out the very mistakes you noticed–and somehow I managed to uncorrect them. Rest assured they shall be re-corrected for the book. Thank you for taking the time and paying such good attention.

And thank you for responding so politely to my rather snotty note! I love Autoportrait, and I was alarmed at the thought that the only translation of it into English was going to be compromised. I’m glad to hear you’re going to have it looked over by someone with better French.
