Mr. Sacks and Mr. Glenn are probably aware that Car 54, Where Are You? used a unique canned-live audience track. The show was filmed with one camera at Biograph, not in front of an audience. However, they would screen each completed episode in front of a live audience at a midtown NY theater (often Joe E. Ross or another cast member would warm up the crowd), record the laughs, then dub them back onto the soundtrack for that episode.

Thus the laughs were genuine , in that they were real-time responses to the content of each episode. And they were canned, in that they were not witnessing a live a performance.
